OPINION

Newcastle have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

The Sun claim that the Magpies have “stepped up their bid” to land the 25-year-old, who was omitted from the Gunners match day squad for the opening game of the season.

It is understood that the 34-time capped England international is beginning to accept his future may lie away from the Emirates Stadium and he has just one year remaining on his Arsenal contract.

Rafael Benitez has demanded that the North East club pull out all the stops to bring the central midfielder to St James’ Park after growing frustrated with their transfer activity.

The report details that Newcastle are one of several clubs interested in Wilshere, with West Ham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Roma, Juventus and Lazio also keen.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle’s transfer business has been slightly underwhelming so far this summer, but Wilshere would be a step in the right direction if they can sign him.

Benitez needs more players with Premier League know-how in his squad and ideally a new central midfielder to play alongside Jonjo Shelvey.

Wilshere would fit the bill for the club and has proven himself in the top flight during his time with Arsenal and Bournemouth last season.

The Englishman is brilliant in possession and could be a real driving force at St James Park.

The only risk would be his history of injuries, but he proved his fitness last year out on loan and the Magpies would have a quality player on their hands if he can rediscover his top form.

Likely to happen?

Wilshere’s future appears to lie away from Arsenal, but it’s unclear where the midfielder will be playing his football next season.

Newcastle should have a decent chance to sign the Arsenal fringe player if they put their name in the hat and have the pull of a world-class manager in Benitez.

However, Wilshere may be dragged into a relegation fight if he moved to St James’ Park and is receiving attention from some Italian giants.

Established Premier League teams could also be a big rival for the midfielder’s signature and the player will be keen to obtain regular first-team football to force his way back into the England squad.
