OPINION

Tottenham have reportedly had a bid rejected to sign Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial this summer with Spurs yet to make a splash in the transfer window thus far.

RMC Sport reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi reported on his personal Twitter account that Mauricio Pochettino’s side had made an offer to sign the 21-year-old, after he fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

However, it is said that Jose Mourinho’s side have rejected an offer from Spurs that would see the former Monaco speed machine move to north London.

Bouhafsi also claimed that Inter Milan have had a loan-to-buy offer for Martial rejected, despite the likes of Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhiataryan, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford all rivalling him for a starting spot.

It remains to be seen if Spurs will re-enter the transfer window for the France international, as they look to finally begin their activity in the transfer window.

Here, This Is Futbol examines whether a move for Martial would benefit Spurs next season, and whether a deal between the two Premier League rivals could be struck.

Good move for Tottenham?

Martial would be an excellent signing for Spurs, as he has shown in the Premier League that he is more than capable of finding the back of the net with his best years ahead of him.

Making 56 Premier League appearances since joining United, Martial has scored 15 goals as well as adding 10 assists mainly from out on the left flank as he continues to terrorise defences with his blistering pace and eye for goal.

Spurs are in need of attacking improvements with the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Georges N’Koudou struggling in north London, while Clinton N’Jie and Josh Onomah have both left the club this summer.

Bringing Martial to Spurs could see Pochettino finally add the missing link to his side, as they look to go one better in the Premier League this season and hold aloft the trophy come May 2018.

Likely to happen?

United’s decision to reject Tottenham’s approaches shows just how much Mourinho wants to keep the Frenchman after Martial impressed for the Reds in pre-season.

However, if they can return with an improved offer, then United could be more willing to sell Martial with plenty of time left in the window to bring in a replacement.

With two years remaining on his contract, United are in a strong position over the future of their number 11, and are only likely to sell if they can bring in a replacement before September 1.

Pochettino must convince chairman Daniel Levy that Martial is worth paying over the odds for as they look to improve on last season’s efforts in the Premier League and the Champions League.
