Newcastle make enquiry for Tosun

OPINION

Newcastle have reportedly made a late move for prolific goalscorer Cenk Tosun from Turkish club Besiktas with just two days left of the transfer window.

The Mail claim on their transfer blog (3;06pm, Wednesday) that the Magpies have made an enquiry for the 26-year-old striker.

It is understood that Premier League rivals Crystal Palace have also made a move for the Turkey international.

Tosun is a powerhouse forward that is recognised for his pace and strength, something has seen him become a recognised goal threat.

He was in brilliant form last season for Besiktas and scored an impressive 24 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle are going to need a new goalscorer if Dwight Gayle leaves and there is every chance Tosun can become the number one striker ahead of Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Tosun was in brilliant form last year in the Turkish top flight and there is no reason he can’t replicate that in England.

The striker left his mark on European football too, scoring four goals during Besiktas’ run in the Champions League and then Europa League.

He has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League and Rafael Benitez could do with a clinical striker in his squad to help them avoid relegation.

Tusan is now at the perfect age for a big-money move to England and his form suggests he could become a big fan favourite if he moved to St James’ Park.

Likely to happen?

It appears that Newcastle have left it far too late to pull off a deal for Tosun, who could be very highly valued by Besiktas.

The striker has become a key player for the Turkish club and may be resigned to lose a star man in the final days of the transfer window.

The Magpies may be forced into overpaying for a striker if they do sell Gayle, with Fulham reportedly launching a £15million bid for their forward.

There would be a lot to sort out for Newcastle to pull of this deal and with the added competition from Crystal Palace it seems unlikely to happen this window.
