OPINION

Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in snapping up free agent Lukas Raeder this summer.

The Mail claim that the Magpies are weighing up a move for the 23-year-old, who is out of contract following his release from Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal.

It is understood the goalkeeper has been training with Southampton, but has not been able to agree terms with the Premier League club.

The report details that Newcastle remain interested in West Ham shot stopper Adrian, but are considering free agent Raeder, who was previously on the books at Bayern Munich.

Good move for Newcastle???

Rafael Benitez is desperate to make a marquee signing still in the transfer window and has been on the search for a goalkeeper.

Raeder is a promising upcoming talent, but is not the player that Newcastle need right now.

The 23-year-old has very little experience and has just 35 senior appearances under his belt during spells with Vitoria and Bayern.

He has never been tested in the Premier League and it would be a huge risk to make him their number one option, with Rob Elliot proving a safer pair of gloves right now.

Newcastle could look to sign the youngster and help him develop in their youth side, but will still need to go out and sign a proven shot stopper.

Likely to happen?

The fact that Raeder has been training with a Premier League club suggests that he could make a switch to England for the first time and Newcastle are in the market for a goalkeeper.

However, experienced boss Benitez is surely not going to put his faith in an untested 23-year-old going into the new campaign back in the top flight.

If Newcastle are looking to sign him as one for the future then they may still face tough competition from Germany heavyweights Dortmund.
