Everton are reportedly preparing a late bid to sign Leicester forward Jamie Vardy ahead of Chelsea.

The Mirror claim that the Toffees are plotting to hijack Chelsea’s £40million move for the 30-year-old.

It is understood that Ronald Koeman still wants a central striker before the lose of the transfer window and believes Vardy is open to a new challenge.

The report details that the England international signed a £100,000-a-week deal with the Foxes, but realises he could increase that with a move to either Chelsea or Everton.

Vardy has become recognised as a feared striker in the English top flight and his electric speed is something that makes him very difficult for opponents.

Good move for Everton?

Everton have had an excellent window so far and signing a top-class striker would be the perfect end.

They would preferably want someone that can score goals in the Premier League and Vardy has shown that before, netting 24 times in the league during Leicester’s title triumph in the 2015/16 season.

However, someone like Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud would be a much better fit for the Everton side and fit into Ronald Koeman’s system.

They need someone physically strong that can link up with some of their creative playmakers, but Vardy is more the type of player that can run in behind.

It would be another huge statement for Everton to bring in Vardy for a £40million deal and he would score goals at Goodison Park, but is not the type of striker they should go for.

Likely to happen?

Everton have shown they are not afraid to spend this summer and club-record £45million signing Gylfi Sigurdsson is proof of that.

It would be a surprise if they were to land Vardy in the remainder of the transfer window and it is doubtful that Leicester want to lose their talisman.

A £40million sum is a huge price tag for a 30-year-old and it could be hard for the Foxes to turn down.

However, Vardy seems unlikely to make the switch to the Toffees and is set to continue in attack for Leicester.
