Tottenham are pushing hard for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes before Thursday’s transfer deadline, but the Catalan giants are unwilling to do business and he favours a move to West Ham, according to a report.

The Daily Mail have claimed via their live transfer blog (Thursday, 1.47pm) that Spurs are eager to add the 24-year-old before the 11.00pm cut-off.

However, due to Portugal international teammate Jose Fonte playing at the Hammers alongside Barcelona not willing to let him go until they sign a replacement, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are facing two obstacles.

The Mail report does state there is “still plenty of mileage” in this move, but after these developmentsĀ This Is FutbolĀ has weighed up whether a deal would still be good for Tottenham and whether it is likely to happen.

Good move for Tottenham?

Nothing’s changed here, Gomes would still be a marquee signing for Tottenham if they managed to secure him and it will be all the more sweeter if they do capture him after these developments. The La Liga star is a player of immense ability and Tottenham must ensure they secure his signature by the end of the day as he could be one of the best pieces of business the club has ever conducted.

Likely to happen?

Fonte was known to be key in getting Cedric Soares to sign for Southampton two summers a go and he is clearly a popular figure among the Portugal squad. However, he should not be a factor in whether a player decides to sign for Tottenham, or West Ham with one offering Champions League football, while the other sits at the foot of the Premier League table. Barcelona are also likely to favour him moving to Spurs on loan and this deal now looks as though it will be dependent on the Nou Camp giants and whether they can bring in a new midfielder before the transfer deadline.
