OPINION

New Tottenham centre-back signing Davinson Sanchez was close to joining European giants Barcelona earlier in the summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports transfer reporter Kaveh Solhekol claimed via his personal Twitter account  on Friday that the 21-year-old looked as though he was heading for La Liga at one stage this summer after Spurs announced via their official Twitter account and website that the Colombia international had signed a contract until 2023.

Sanchez has only made 80 senior appearances in football to date with both Atletico Nacional and Ajax, but he could be set for a huge future in the game.

Here, This Is Futbol analyses whether Sanchez leaving Tottenham for Barcelona one day will be good for the club and what the likelihood of the move occurring is.

Good move for Tottenham?

Tottenham’s investment in another young player will have paid off enormously if Sanchez one day earns a move to Barcelona.

The north London club have already struck success after bringing in Dele Alli from League One outfit MK Dons and the Englishman himself has had tenuous links to Catalonia.

But, if Sanchez makes the move to Barcelona, which will be similar to when Gareth Bale moved to Real Madrid then it can only be a good move for the north London club and they could have even possibly won their first Premier League title.

Likely to happen?

For Sanchez to earn a move to Barcelona he would have had to have performed at the top level on a consistent basis for a number of years.

With both Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano 30 and above the Catalan giants may start seeking replacements sooner, rather than later.

It is also well-known in the football world that once Barcelona come calling a player doesn’t say no, meaning the only thing preventing Sanchez from making a move to the Nou Camp is whether he performs at the level necessary.
