Chris Sutton has chosen three Rangers players in his Scottish Premiership team of the week after Pedro Caixinha’s side beat Ross County 3-1 away from home.

Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos scored a brace for the Gers in the first half to give Caixinha’s side a 2-0 lead at the break, before nine-time Mexico international Eduardo Herrera scored his first Rangers goal in the 89th minute.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, former Celtic striker and outspoken pundit Sutton selected defenders James Tavernier and Bruno Alves in his side, as well as 21-year-old striker Morelos.

Tavernier was crucial for the Gers on Sunday afternoon, as he produced the magic required to break the deadlock by getting to the byline and standing an inch-perfect cross up to Morelos who produced a top header to beat Scott Fox.

The former Newcastle right-back is beginning to show the kind of form that saw him score 15 times in 2015-16, with two goals and two assists in seven matches from defence already this season.

The Gers doubled their lead after a moment of madness from Fox saw him escape a desperate tackle from Morelos, before dallying on possession and allowing Morelos to steal in and double his tally.

Thomas Mikkelsen got one back for Ross County on the hour mark, but Herrera’s neat finish late on secured all three points for the Gers in what was only their second league win of the season.

Caixinha will be desperate for his side to develop some form of momentum from the win after the international break, as they prepare to face Dundee at Ibrox on September 9.

OPINION

Although not an ideal start to the season, there were signs that a number of Rangers’ new signings are beginning to warm to their new environment, showing coherence with the original Gers players. Tavernier’s combination with Morelos and Lee Wallace’s assist for Herrera was testament to that. Caixinha will have taken plenty of positives from the match, and if he can get the relationship between new and old to blossom even further then he will be celebrating more wins. Catching Celtic up after the Hoops failed to overcome St. Johnstone, the Gers sit just three points behind their Old Firm rivals and are still very much in a title fight at this early stage of the season
