OPINION

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Barcelona attacking midfielder Arda Turan during the summer transfer window.

Spanish publication AS claims that United boss Jose Mourinho personally knows the 30-year-old through his agent Jorge Mendes and the player’s agent Ahmet Bulut.

The report claims that Galatasaray are the favourites to sign the midfielder after Bulut is said to have travelled to Turkey to discuss a potential summer deal.

Good move for Manchester United?

Moutinho has reportedly been desperate to add a goalscoring midfielder to the squad this season and Turan would certainly fit the bill.

Although he has failed to make his mark at the Camp Nou due to the array of attacking talent in the squad, the Turkey international still managed to contribute with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions last season.

Turan is not a player who can provide the team with pace but he has proven that he is quite similar to first-team regular Juan Mata in the sense that he has an eye for goal and he can also bring his fellow teammates into play.

Acquiring the services of Turan to Old Trafford would also add a winning mentality to the squad as the midfielder has twice lifted the La Liga title with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Turan’s bullish style of play could potentially suit the physicality of the Premier League as he is not afraid to put in a challenge and mix it up with the opposition.

There is little doubt that the midfielder will produce his best once given a chance to play on a consistent basis but his lack of pace might hinder a United team who looked quick and strong against West Ham on the weekend.

Likely to happen?

With the player’s agent set to sit down and negotiate with Galatasaray, Turan is unlikely to feature in the Premier League this season.

The midfielder has an emotion connection with the Turkish club as he spent the earlier stages of his footballing career there and he left as an icon.

With Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial impressing for United on the weekend, the Manchester club might not be able to guarantee the midfielder many minutes on the field this season.

This deal could have potentially been on the cards if United struggled in the opening match of the Premier League but they put on a dazzling performance which indicates that they might not need to try and lure more attackers to the club this summer.
