OPINION

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is reportedly set to stay at the Emirates Stadium and fight for his position despite the club making him available for transfer earlier in the summer.

The Mail claim that the 25-year-old wants to remain with the Gunners and try to convince manager Arsene Wenger that he deserves to be in the club’s plans.

It is understood that Sampdoria and Antalyaspor have made firm offers for Wislhere, but he wants to reignite his career with the north London club.

Good move for Arsenal?

Wilshere is a product of the Arsenal academy and should be given the chance to fight for his place in the upcoming season if he desires.

The Gunners may need a fifth genuine central midfield option in their squad with Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny the existing options.

If Wilshere is willing to be patient and make the most of opportunities in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions then it could work out.

However, the negative has to be the 12 months remaining on his contract and that Arsenal may lose the chance to sell him on for a good price.

They will be banking on the fact that he can rediscover the form that made him an England regular, but that does not seem likely following his recent loan spell at Bournemouth.

Likely to happen?

Given Arsenal’s current midfield situation then it seems very plausible that Wilshere could make a return to the squad in the new campaign.

He will provide a good back-up option and the Gunners squad is going to be extremely stretched.

Wenger’s side will certainly be trying to win the Europa League, something that Manchester United did last season, and having a strong squad will help that.

Keeping Wilshere will save splashing out on a new signing and he is someone who already knows everything about the club.
