Ian Taylor believes Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce deserves time to get the Midlands giants back on track after a dismal start to the Championship season.

Bruce has watched on from the sidelines as Villa have begun their 2017-18 campaign in awful fashion, picking up just one point from their opening three matches against Hull, Cardiff and Reading.

Fans have questioned Bruce’s future in the managerial dugout at Villa Park, with expectations of a return to the Premier League at the second attempt starting to become far-fetched.

Villa icon Ian Taylor responded to a fan on his Twitter account regarding Bruce’s future as manager, claiming Bruce will be “under no illusion” over what will happen if he cannot “put things right”.

Villa have managed just two goals all season, conceding six despite signing former England and Chelsea captain John Terry earlier this summer.

Bruce will be looking for his side to put things right on Saturday as they play host to Championship giants Norwich at Villa Park, in what will be another difficult test for Bruce’s side.

The last time the two sides met, Villa earned a 2-0 victory back in March at Villa Park thanks to a brace from Jonathan Kodjia and Bruce will be hoping for a repeat come Saturday.

OPINION

Bruce has failed to provide consistency at Villa since taking over last October. He has seen his side go on unbeaten spells, before going from top to bottom and failing to win for a number of matches. If the promotion expert is to secure his fifth career climbs from Championship to Premier League this season, he must begin to add consistency to his side in order to push Villa towards the top of the table. If Bruce is not in the top six by October, then owner Tony Xia must seriously consider his position as manager of the club, which could see the former Hull and Wigan manager suffer the same fate as former boss Roberto Di Matteo. It is make of break time for Bruce and although Taylor is right in saying he deserves time, there must be a point where a change is needed.
