Leeds United are targeting a new striker from the Championship, according to Football Insider

The football website claims its sources understand that the club is interested in Jordan Hugill from Preston North End, along with fellow Championship side Reading.

They say that Birmingham have had two bids for the player turned down, and that Sunderland are also keen.

Preston North End want to keep hold of their man, but will face a stern test of their resolve, with lots of the league’s big hitters seemingly after their man.

This Is Futbol looks at whether Hugill would be a good move for Leeds and whether it is likely to happen.

Good move for Leeds?

Hugill hasn’t been the most prolific striker in the Championship – steady is probably the better word for him.

He has scored 23 goals in 90 games for Preston North End since joining in 2014, and has also had a couple of loan spells out at lower league clubs.

He scored 12 in 44 Championship appearances last season.

However, he could be what Leeds are looking for – a powerful target man who can compliment the creativity manager Thomas Christiansen already has in his side.

The price would probably be right as well – the club has turned down a couple of bids already though, and Preston will know that Leeds have money in their pockets and need to move fast.

Likely to happen?

There are only eight days to go before the end of the window and The Sun claim Leeds have already reportedly had a £6million bid turned down for Rudy Gestede from Middlesborough.

They also reportedly have young striker Jay-Roy Grot coming in for a medical on Wednesday, although at just 19-years-old, he would be seen as a player for the future.

Christiansen has already said he needs to get someone in fast and Hugill could easily turn out to be the man they want.

Hugill only has one year left on his contract and if Preston North End decide to cash in – which is likely given his contract situation and the amount of interest in him – Leeds could well be his new destination.

Would Leeds fans be happy? That’s another question. It’s unlikely that Hugill will net as many goals as Chris Wood, but if the team is contributing goals from all over the pitch, this might not matter so much.

With the way the team’s performing at the moment, Leeds fans will be happy to trust in the opinion of their boss.
