Aston Villa have activated the release clause in Ahmed Elmohamady’s Hull City contract, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster has revealed that the 29-year-old midfielder has left Hull’s pre-season tour in Portugal in order to enter talks with the Championship club.

Elmohamady was a key contributor during Hull’s 2016/17 campaign, but the midfielder’s efforts throughout his 37 appearances weren’t enough to keep the Tigers from relegation.

Sky Sports also tweeted the breaking news on their official Twitter account on Monday evening, and stated that Villa had activated the Egyptian’s release clause.

If the Championship outfit are successful in their pursuit of the Egypt international, it will mark the third time Steve Bruce has signed the midfielder.

The Villa boss made Elmohamady a permanent addition to the Sunderland in 2011 and signed him once again at Hull two years later after a number of seasons on loan.

The former Hull manager has already secured two new players during the summer transfer window, as he has signed Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone on a season-long loan in addition to making John Terry the club’s new captain ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

Elmohamady would be Hull’s sixth player to leave the club this summer after Harry Maguire, Tom Hiddlestone, Johan Ter Horst, Josh Tymon and Curtis Davies all made an exit from the KCOM Stadium following the club’s relegation.
