Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout is set to fly to Spain this weekend to hold talks with Real Betis over a potential transfer this summer, according to L’Equipe.

The French football newspaper claim on their website that the 24-year-old has been the subject of “intense interest” from the La Liga side, having impressed during his loan spell while at St Etienne.

They report that the French side are also interested in his signature but Betis have taken the lead by offering him talks with the club’s top brass, which he has reportedly accepted.

The versatile central midfielder, who can operate in an attacking or in a defensive role, was shipped out of Villa Park following the club’s relegation in the 2015/16 season, and spent almost the entirety of last season with Les Verts in France.

He proved to be an important member of the squad, missing just one league game during his time at the club as he went on to make 43 appearances across all competitions, scoring four and notching up five assists.

Having signed for Villa from FC Nantes in the summer of 2015, and contracted until 2020, he disappointed during his debut season for the club, making 29 appearances across league and cup competitions but picking up just five assists as the Villans slipped out of the Premier League.
