Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes wants Celtic attacker Gary Mackay-Steven to join him at Pittodrie this summer, according to the Herald.

The Scottish news outlet have detailed on their website that manager Brendan Rodgers does not want a squad larger than 23 players and some fringe players will now be moved on in an attempt to clear room.

Mackay-Steven is likely to be on that list of seniors to be moved out and the report states that the 26-year-old “has almost certainly played his last game” for the Glasgow giants.

But, with last season’s runners-up Aberdeen said to be interested he may not have to drop too far down the Scottish football pyramid to find his next move.

Fellow Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie is of course already a part of the Dons squad after moving on loan this summer following the Hoops’ purchase of Jonny Hayes.

Mackay-Steven could now follow the youngster to McInnes’ team, but it is also said that the one-time Scotland international could be allowed a permanent deal away from Parkhead after moving from Dundee United in February 2015.

He has played 63 times in total for the club since his move, scoring 10 times while providing 11 and he still has two years remaining on his contract.

But, last season under Rodgers he played just 11 times in all competitions without finding the back of the net.
