Liverpool are lining up a surprise loan move for Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed on their live transfer blog on Sunday [00:52am] that the Premier League giants will look to snap up the 23-year-old on temporary terms so they can evaluate him before trying to make the move permanent.

The interest from Liverpool is very surprising, considering Amavi has been largely blasted by Aston Villa supporters for his poor performances in the Championship last season and because he failed a medical at Sevilla.

The Mirror reports that the La Liga outfit backed out of signing the Frenchman for £8.5million after the club’s medical staff were led to believe that he could suffer another serious knee injury.

Amavi’s start to life at Villa Park was severely hampered when he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in 2015 but has struggled to find form in Steve Bruce’s squad ever since returning.

It is said that Liverpool, who are notably short of a top left-back, are lining up an approach for a loan due to his knee.

The former Nice full-back has made 48 appearances across all competitions for Villa, with 34 of them coming in last season’s Championship campaign as the West Midlands outfit managed to avoid another relegation battle and scrap for a mid-table place.
