Leeds United are plotting a shock raid on Sheffield Wednesday for playmaker Almen Abdi, according to HITC.

The sports website claim that Leeds are weighing up a swoop for Switzerland international, 30, after he struggled to make an impact at Wednesday following his arrival from Watford 12 months ago.

HITC report that United are keen to be at the front of the queue to land Abdi if he becomes available, with the possibility growing that his club will listen to offers.

It is said that Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen is keeping close tabs on the versatile playmaker as he looks to strengthen his attacking options in the summer transfer window.

Leeds’ interest is a surprise given that transfers between the Yorkshire rivals are rare due to the hostility between the two sets of supporters.

But Abdi is regarded as an attractive proposition because of his pedigree and experience of promotion from the Championship with former club Watford.

The six-times Swiss international was a mainstay of the Hornets side that finished second in 2014-15 to return to the Premier League and scored an impressive 25 goals during 131 games for the club.

He was also prolific for FC Zurich, where he netted 43 times and supplied 20 assists in 167 matches.

At Wednesday, Abdi has struggled for game time and made just 16 appearances, of which 11 have been starts.
