Tuesday night’s defeat to Luxembourg side Progres Niederkorn will go down as one of the most disappointing results in Rangers’ history.

Their slender first leg lead, thanks to a first half Kenny Miller strike, meant that all they had to do was avoid defeat in front of the 5,534 fans at the Stade Jos Haubert, 3,000 of which were backing the Gers.

Instead, they crumbled under the pressure of the occasion, and allowed Progres to score just their second and third goal in 13 European ties to sink Pedro Caixinha’s hopes of a Europa League campaign.

One goal would have sent the Gers through, but the closest they came was hitting the woodwork on three occasions, veteran midfielder Niko Kranjcar managing to head onto the bar from just three yards.

It was a truly underwhelming display, and will leave the Potuguese manager with more questions than answers as the upcoming Premiership season approaches.

While their European departure will mean that they have more time to focus on their domestic pursuits, this performance will give the likes of Old Firm rivals Celtic and last season’s runners-up Aberdeen no reason to fear for their spots at the top of the table.

Here, This is FutbolĀ looks at five things we learned from their humiliating defeat, including two first team attackers who Caixinha should look to offload before the season begins:
