Estudiantes’ young centre-back Juan Foyth has confirmed that there are talks ongoing between his club and Tottenham over a potential transfer.

The 19-year-old Argentinian defender has made just seven appearances for his club, while he also has experience of international action with Argentina’s Under-20s side.

He has actually made more appearances for his country than his club, having turned out 12 times for the Under-20s, three of those coming at this year’s Under-20s World Cup, with his side being knocked out at the group stage after defeats to Korea Republic and eventual champions England.

He told Argentinian online radio station Continental.com.ar: “I know that my agent and Veron (Juan Sebastian Veron, club president) are travelling to speak with Tottenham.

“I would like to play in Europe, and if something comes up that convinces me and the club I will go.

“If I do go it is not because I want to, but rather to help the club out economically.”

Foyth made his debut for his club in March of this year, starting at the heart of defence and helping his side keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 home victory over Patronato.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino currently has a wealth of defensive talent at his disposal, and Foyth may face a challenge to break into the starting XI were he to join.

He would have to find a way past Belgian internationals Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, while Kevin Wimmer, Cameron Carter-Vickers and England international Eric Dier are also options for the Argentinian boss.

However, Wimmer could find himself on the way out of the club this summer, as his manager is said to be looking to replace him with Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson.
