Tottenham will have to pay £20million to sign Swansea centre-back Alfie Mawson this summer, according to the Sun.

The print edition of the newspaper (2 July, page 63) claim that the Welsh side have slapped the huge price tag on the player they signed for £5million from Barnsley last summer.

The Sun report that Spurs have stepped up their interest in signing Mawson, 23, as they aim to strengthen in the centre of their defence.

This comes after a report in the Sun that manager Mauricio Pochettino has “been in touch” with Swansea about a potential deal for the man who captained England Under-21s at this summer’s European Championships.

Mawson’s club believe that his value has quadrupled after a fine debut season in which he was integral to their Premier League survival before getting international age-group recognition.

Tottenham are reportedly in the market for a new centre-back amid doubts over the future of fringe player Kevin Wimmer, who could return to the Bundesliga after two seasons in England.

Tottenham have turned their attention to Mawson after losing out to Leicester in the race to sign Harry Maguire.

The 2015-16 Premier League champions announced last month that they had landed the defender from Hull for £17million.
