Tottenham have agreed the permanent transfer of defender Federico Fazio to Roma, it has been confirmed.

Spurs announced on their official Twitter account on Saturday night that the Argentine centre-back has completed a switch to the Serie A club after spending the 2016-17 season on loan.

Roma have taken up the option to sign Fazio, 30, for a fee of £2.8million.

Fazio has signed on the dotted line after being pictured by the Mail undergoing a medical in the Italian capital Rome yesterday (Saturday).

The 30-year-old defender joined Tottenham from Spanish club Sevilla in the summer of 2014 for £8.5million after signing a four-year contract but struggled to make an impact in the Premier League after being sent off on his debut.

Fazio, who has been capped three times by Argentina, was loaned back to Sevilla for the second half of 2015-16 before securing a loan-to-buy switch to Roma last season that proved to be a resounding success.

The centre-back was a mainstay of the Roma team that challenged strongly for the Serie A title only to finish runners-up to champions Juventus.

Fazio made 48 appearances in all competitions, 37 of which came in the league as he demonstrated the calibre that had persuaded Spurs to sign him in the first place.

A club statement revealed the Argentine moved last summer for a loan fee of £1million, with Roma having the option to buy him outright for £2.8million.

Tottenham said in a statement: ‘”We have reached agreement with AS Roma for the permanent transfer of Federico Fazio.

“Federico joined us in August 2014 from Sevilla and went on to make 32 appearances in a Spurs shirt before returning to spend half of the 2015-16 season on loan with the Spanish side.

“We wish Federico all the best for the future.”
