Newcastle are looking to secure a loan move for young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that manager Rafael Benitez is hoping to provide the 20-year-old with first team football in the lower leagues of England, despite the youngster returning to Tyneside as a World Cup winner.

Woodman played a key role in helping the England Under-20 side pick up the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea, as he saved a penalty in the final to ensure the Young Lions secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Venezuela.

He was presented with the golden glove award, recognising the best goalkeeper throughout the tournament, but his international efforts have not been enough to convince Benitez to make him his first choice shot stopper at St James’ Park.

Yet to make his senior debut for the Magpies, the youngster was introduced to first team football during a loan spell at Crawley Town, while he spent the second half of last season as Scottish side Kilmarnock’s first choice between the sticks.

Contracted at Newcastle until 2020, Woodman is highly rated at the club, but with the likes of Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Tim Krul all vying to be number one this summer, first team opportunities will be tough to come by.

Bury boss Lee Clark is said to be interested in making a move for the youngster, while the Chronicle also name fellow League One side Peterborough as another potential destination.
