Newcastle are set to face off against West Brom in the hunt for Leicester striker Islam Slimani, according to Le Buteur

The Algerian football news website claim that the Magpies and the Baggies are both interested in the 29-year-old after Everton dropped out of the hunt following their signing of Wayne Rooney.

They say that the Toffees had been leading the pursuit after scouting him for the past six months, but the Englishman’s arrival means it now appears to be a two horse race.

However, the Express have previously reported that fellow Premier League side West Ham have also shown interest in the Algerian international, who looks set to offloaded after just one season at Leicester.

A record signing for the Foxes, Slimani arrived at the King Power Stadium in a £29million deal, but failed to live up to his price tag, as he ended up limited to substitute cameos come the end of the campaign.

He managed to hit just nine goals in 31 appearances, seven of which came in his 23 Premier League appearances, as the club fell to a 12th placed finish a year after picking up the top flight title.

However, any potential suitors need just look at his international record to see his goal scoring potential, with 25 goals in 51 appearances since his debut against Niger back in 2012.
