Newcastle United have been offered the opportunity to sign central defender Stefan O’Connor this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The 20-year-old is currently available on a free transfer after he was one of three academy players to be released by fellow Premier League side Arsenal at the end of last week.

The newspaper claims that there is a potential two-year contract on the table from the Magpies for the defender this summer following the London club’s decision to let him go.

Last season, the youngster was sent out on loan to MVV Maastricht who ply their trade in the second tier of Dutch football, but he failed to make a significant impact during his spell.

The defender endured a tough season as he was forced to watch on from the substitutes bench for the majority of the season, making a total of four appearances in all competitions.

O’Connor spent seven years with the North London club but he was unable to feature in a single Premier League match during this period of time.

However, the youngster did make a cameo appearance for the Gunners in the 2014-15 Champions League campaign when Arsenal beat Galatasaray 4-1 away from home.

The defender has also featured in League Two with York City during the 2015-16 season but he only managed to feature in four matches.
