Everton fans have expressed their delight over the announcement of Wayne Rooney’s return to the Merseyside club.

The Toffees confirmed that the 31-year-old would be joining the squad in his second spell with the club in a two-year-deal.

Everton announced the news on their official Twitter account on Sunday, and said that the Blues were delighted to bring the Manchester United star back to the club.

He becomes their sixth senior signing this summer in what has been a blaze of transfer activity that has also brought Michael Keane, Sandro Ramirez, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford and Henry Onyekuru to the club for over £100million.

The England international began his footballing career at the Everton youth academy and climbed the ranks before moving to Manchester United in 2004, and Toffees fans have taken to social media to welcome the star striker ‘home’.

Rooney joined the Everton youth academy in 1996 and progressed to the first team in 2002, where he spent two years, made 71 appearances and scored 15 goals before he was signed by United for just under £32 million.

The former United skipper played at Old Trafford for 13 years and during that time he made a staggering 559 appearances and scored 253 goals, and he has now performed a full circle by taking his goal-scoring prowess back to Goodison Park.

On the official Everton Twitter account, Rooney recorded a video message for the Everton fans, where he said he couldn’t wait to play for the Blues again.

“Hi everybody, I’m delighted to be back at Everton,” The 31-year-old said on the Blues’ Twitter account. “I can’t wait to put the Blue shirt on again and run out at Goodison.”
