OPINION

Leeds are reportedly going head to head with Yorkshire rivals Hull City for Everton’s Matthew Pennington but should abandon plans to sign the defender, and instead look elsewhere at Goodison Park.

The Daily Mail credited Leeds with an interest along with relegated outfit Hull, with Pennington likely to be sent on loan in order to gain some first-team game time.

Pennington, 22, made three first-team appearances last season for the Toffees, which included scoring his first Everton goal in a Merseyside derby that eventually saw Ronald Koeman’s side lose 3-1 at Anfield.

Leeds have already made nine signings this summer but are yet to solve their defensive issues at centre-back and left-back, which is why Pennington has seemingly arose as an option.

ButĀ This Is FutbolĀ believes the young defender has not yet shown enough to warrant a place in Thomas Christiansen’s first team and that the Spanish head coach should move for a handful of other Everton fringe players.
