David Season believes that Wayne Rooney deserves a lot of credit for returning to his boyhood club Everton during the summer transfer window.

The former England international was the first goalkeeper to concede a goal to the 31-year-old in the Premier League as Rooney announced himself on the big stage with a late winning goal against Seaman’s Arsenal side during the 2002-03 season at Goodison Park.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Seaman was quick to praise Rooney for his incredible footballing career and believes that he can Everton to the next level in the near-future.

“Wayne is a proper player,” he said.

“Too many people give him criticism and people should appreciate what he has done.

“He still has a few years at the top.

“It is good he has gone to Everton. He could have gone to China and the challenge might not have been as hard.

“Going to Everton, he still has a lot to do. Not a lot to prove  but a lot to do. They should once again push for Europe.”

Rooney enjoyed a fine first spell at Goodison Park, contributing with 15 goals in 71 appearances in all competitions.

The striker announced himself on the international stage with some outstanding performances in the 2004 European Championships in Portugal where he notched up four goals and one assist during his first tournament with the England national team.

Rooney was snapped up by Manchester United the following season where he enjoyed a glittering 13-year career, winning five Premier League titles, three League Cup trophies, an FA Cup and a Champions League trophy.

The England international became United’s all-time leading goalscorer last season and he leaves Old Trafford having scored a total of 253 goals.

Everton will be hopeful that Rooney can once again light up Goodison Park with his impressive performances next season.
