Newcastle United are the favourites to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
Sky Bet have placed the Magpies at 7/2 on Tuesday afternoon to land the 26-year-old during the summer transfer window.
The newly-promoted Premier League are currently a long way ahead of a host of Premier League sides who are also credited with an interest in signing the midfielder this summer with Leicester City placed at 9/2, Burnley at 11/1 and Swansea City at 16/1.
This comes after Bleacher Report correspondent Dean Jones recently claimed on his personal Twitter account that Newcastle were in the race to sign McCarthy this summer.
The Republic of Ireland international might find it difficult to enjoy regular first-team football next season as Everton have completed the signing of midfielder Davy Klaassen this summer.
McCarthy endured a tough campaign at Goodison Park last season, after suffering a number of injuries which kept him on the sidelines for a lengthy period.
The midfielder only managed to make 13 appearances last season but he still contributed with one goal and two assists.
McCarthy would be a great asset to Newcastle next season as he has shown that he is capable of producing the goods in midfield, whether it be as a defensive midfielder or deployed as the number 10 role just behind the striker.
The midfielder can also provide vast Premier League experience, having featured in over 200 top flight matches.
