Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk is interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Liam Bridcutt, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that the newly-appointed Riverside chief is hoping to raid his former club for the signature of one of their most prized midfield assets in the coming months.

Bridcutt, 28, currently serves a club captain at Elland Road, having been snapped up by the Championship club by then-manager Monk a year ago.

The two-time Scotland international had initially moved to the Yorkshire-based side on a loan deal from Sunderland during the 2015-16 season.

But he became Monk’s fifth senior signing as Leeds manager when he made his move permanent last summer, and the 38-year-old is seeking a reunion with the midfield enforcer ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

Bridcutt made 25 appearances in all competitions for Leeds last season, where he featured largely as a defensive-midfielder in Monk’s line-up, but also contributed two goals.

However, the midfielder only put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal at Elland Road when he agreed his permanent transfer, meaning he has just one year left remaining on his contract.

But it remains to be seen what the future holds for Bridcutt and what role he might play under his new Leeds United boss, Thomas Christiansen.

The Danish chief was appointed as Monk’s successor earlier this week, and arrives from Cypriot champions APOEL.
