Former Dundee United ace Ryan Gauld has stated Fabio Cardoso would be the perfect man to partner new Rangers signing Bruno Alves in the centre of defence.

The Gers have been linked with the 23-year-old Vitoria de Setubal defender by the Daily Mail in the past, and manager Pedro Caixinha is said to be keen on him.

Rangers announced Alves’ arrival on their official website on Wednesday afternoon, and Gauld has stated they should snap up Cardoso as well.

Speaking to The Herald, he said of Cardoso: “First and foremost, he is a good defender – he knows how to defend. After that he is very comfortable on the ball.

“He is being linked with Rangers, and Rangers are a team that’s going to want possession all the time and build from the back. That’s one of his strong points I would say. I think he’s got all the attributes to fit in.

“I think it would definitely benefit him if he had Bruno Alves beside him. It would benefit anyone to play beside him. He has been around his fair share of clubs and also played regularly at international level. I think it would be a very good partnership.”

Gauld spent the first half of the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Vitoria, so he knows Cardoso well having played alongside him.

The 23-year-old has impressed at his club this season, and has become a mainstay in the heart of their defence, making 27 appearances in all competitions.

He joined Vitoria on a free from Benfica B last summer, but he looks likely to leave in the upcoming transfer window.

However, Rangers are not the only side interested in acquiring his services and the Daily Record reported that Wolves could rival them to his signature.

Cardoso was capped four times by Portugal Under-20s, and featured in the Under-21s squad, but he never made an appearance for the side.
