Celtic are not interested in signing experienced full-back Reto Ziegler this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim that the experienced defender does not feature in the Scottish treble winners’ summer transfer plans, contrary to an earlier admission from the player about his future.

Ziegler, 31, had revealed to Swiss tabloid newspaper Blick that Celtic had made a formal approach for his services, and that La Liga outfit Real Betis were also coveting his signature.

The former Tottenham and Juventus player is available to be snapped up on a free transfer this summer after he was released from FC Sion, following a two-and-a-half-year spell back in his homeland.

But the latest report from the Scottish Sun has dismissed Ziegler’s claims, with Celtic appearing unlikely to add another left-back to their ranks ahead of the new season.

Brendan Rodgers already has talented youngster Kieran Tierney at his disposal, while Emilio Izaguirre has cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines over the last 12 months.

The Honduran veteran was linked with a move away from the club this summer in pursuit of more regular first-team opportunities, but he revealed last month that he would be staying at Parkhead for another year.

Ziegler can also play at centre-back, but the well-travelled Switzerland international does not appear likely to be challenging for a place in Rodgers’ back-four next season.

His decorated CV boasts spells at several of Europe’s elite clubs, including Juventus, Tottenham, Fenerbahce and Lokomotiv Moscow.
