Sunderland are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Black Cats believe that the 24-year-old keeper would be the perfect man to replace outgoing youngster Jordan Pickford.

This story follows up from the Sky Sports News report that Sunderland have agreed a £30million fee with Premier League side Everton for goalkeeper Pickford.

The Mail claims that Jose Mourinho has already told Johnstone that he can leave Old Trafford this summer for an offer around £5million.

It’s also reported that a number of English clubs are also keeping a close on eye on Johnstone, including Leeds United, Watford and Leicester City.

This comes after a previous report in the same newspaper which claimed that Championship Aston Villa want to sign Johnstone on a permanent deal this summer.

The United goalkeeper signed for Villa on loan during the January transfer window where he was able to get some experience under his belt, making 22 Championship appearances and keeping eight clean sheets.

Johnstone has returned to Old Trafford but he is unlikely to break his way into the first-team set up as United currently have David de Gea and Sergio Romero at their disposal.

The youngster’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of next season.
