Aston Villa must join Nottingham Forest in their reported pursuit of Rangers academy product Barrie McKay as they look to return to the Premier League at the second attempt.

The Daily Mail claims Mark Warburton’s Forest are interested in the 22-year-old winger after he was sent to train with the 54-time Scottish champions’ Under-20 side.

McKay’s future at Ibrox has plunged even further into doubt after it is believed that he turned down a two-year extension and a pay rise to his current Rangers contract earlier this year.

However, Rangers’ number 10 was named in Pedro Caixinha’s side to face Luxembourg outfit Progres on Thursday, with five senior players including Andy Halliday and Joe Dodoo missing out.

This Is FutbolĀ considers three reasons why Aston Villa would strengthen their chances of gaining promotion back to the Premier League if they added Scotland international McKay to their ranks this summer.
