Former Rangers defender Jimmy Nicholl has praised manager Pedro Caixinha for his application of hard discipline at the club.

The Portuguese only arrived at Ibrox in March, but he has swiftly established a tightly-run ship with his hard-ball approach, with several first-team players already falling foul of his disciplinary standards.

Harry Forrester, who made just one appearance under Caixinha last season, is the most recent example of a Rangers player being disciplined for his attitude and application at the club.

A report by the Daily Record claimed earlier this week that Caixinha had banished the 26-year-old from training at their Auchenhowie base for the next two weeks, and demanded he find himself a new club.

But it is not the first time that Forrester has felt the wrath of his manager, as he had been ordered to undergo a 6am training session with team-mate Michael O’Halloran a month ago.

Meanwhile, he also been sent home early from training on one previous occasion, but the latest incident does not paint a pretty picture for his long-term future at Ibrox.

In light of the latest disciplinary issue, ex-defender Nicholl, who enjoyed two separate spells at Rangers, believes Caixinha’s approach is much-needed.

He told the Evening Times: “It’s good to see Pedro doing what he is doing. I know the difference between discipline and non-discipline, and if you don’t have it then it just gets out of hand.

“Even if it’s only one or two players, if you don’t discipline them then you lose the respect of the honest pros who might think that action should be getting taken.

“If the player hasn’t been applying himself in training properly, even if his future isn’t at Rangers, then that’s not acceptable.”

Forrester moved to Rangers from Brentford in 2015, and was handed a fresh contract extension by former manager Mark Warburton in April 2016.

However, his relationship with the current chief has seemingly reached breaking point and it appears as though the attacking-midfielder has already played his last game for the club.
