New Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has admitted that he will face a fight for a place in the starting XI following the arrival of fellow forward Eduardo Herrera.

Rangers confirmed that they had secured the signing of 28-year-old Herrera from Mexican side Pumas UNAM last week, his arrival being the eighth at Ibrox this summer.

The striker joins Kenny Miller, Martyn Waghorn and fellow new arrival Morelos in the tussle for a place in Pedro Caixinha’s starting XI for the upcoming season.

As a result of the Mexican’s arrival, 21-year-old Morelos says he knows he might have to wait and bide his time on the bench before earning a role in the first team.

He told the Daily Record: “He (Herrera) has already played for Mexico and has had a good career and he scores goals.

“It’s going to be a bit difficult to get a place in the team, but not impossible.”

Herrera was not at his goal scoring best last season, hitting four goals in 21 appearances for Pumas before joining Veracruz on loan for the second half of the season, where he scored just two goals in eight appearances.

Meanwhile Morelos will be hoping to continue his fine goal scoring form from the last campaign, as he netted 20 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Finnish side HJK Helsinki.

Both Herrera and Morelos could be in line to make their debuts for Rangers in their Europa League qualifier against Luxembourg side Progres Niederkorn at Ibrox on Thursday night.
