Celtic defender Kieran Tierney is confident that “10 days rest” is sufficient enough to recharge his batteries before starting pre-season training.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are set to play competitive football at the start of July as they look to qualify for the Champions League group stages for the second consecutive season.

The Hoops will need to get through three rounds of qualifying matches in order to progress to the Champions League group stage draw which takes place at the end of August.

The qualifying matches mean that the Celtic players will be unable to enjoy a prolonged holiday following their historic domestic exploits last season.

However, speaking to the Scottish Sun, Tierney reveals that he is not concerned about the lack of rest at the end of the season as he believes that it is all part of being an elite sportsman.

“We all know what it’s like now, with six games to reach the Champions League,” he said.

“That’s the way it is in Scotland and we just have to knuckle down and get on with it.

“That’s the mindset you need to have as a footballer. If you want to be at the top of your profession, you don’t get much rest.

“I had four days away after the Cup Final and I now have ten days off to recharge the batteries. But even during that time I’ll still be working to make sure I’m sharp for pre-season.”

The 20-year-old is still recovering from a facial knock that he picked up during the Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen last month.

The situation is not new to the youngster as he played the full 90 minutes in five out of Celtic’s six Champions League qualification matches at the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

Despite reaching the group stages of the elite European competition, the Hoops struggled to compete throughout the campaign and finished bottom, failing to pick up a single victory.

Rodgers will be looking for some major improvements in the Champions League next season.
