Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that there is an offer on the table for 36-year-old defender Kolo Toure to remain at the club as a coach and as a fringe player.

The Ivorian international, who has won Premier League titles at Arsenal and Manchester City, joined the Hoops in the summer of 2016 on a free transfer after seeing his contract at Liverpool expire, signing a one-year deal.

With his contract set to expire this summer, his manager Rodgers has confirmed that he would like the experienced defender to remain at Celtic Park as a fringe player, in a coaching position, or a mix of the two.

He told the Scottish Sun: “His contract has run out, but he is someone I would like to have a role for. It’s something that he and I have spoken about.

“He just needs time to see where he’s at, in terms of playing, or whether he falls into the coaching role more.

“Guys like that are very, very important, not just for changing rooms, but for clubs.

“It is important to have good people. In the environment, you need to have the right type in there, and Kolo is definitely that.”

The Ivory Coast man made fleeting appearances throughout his time at the club last season, starting 11 of his 20 appearances across all competitions as he played second fiddle to the likes of Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko.

The Premier League veteran, with 353 top flight appearances to his name, made over turned out over 300 times across all competitions for Arsenal, over 100 for Manchester City and 71 for Liverpool during his time in England.

He also stands as the second highest capped Ivorian international with 118 caps, having made his debut in July 2000, five behind record holder Didier Zokora and 21 ahead of his brother Yaya.
