Jackson offers his thoughts on Griffiths

Darren Jackson has claimed that English club will now “sit up and take notice” of Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths following his heroics for Scotland.

The 26-year-old scored a stunning brace against England during a crucial World Cup qualifier earlier on this month which helped Gordon Strachan’s men record a 2-2 draw against their rivals.

The Three Lions were clear favourites going into that match at Hampden and they took the lead midway through the second half when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain found the back of the net.

However, late into the second period, striker Griffiths scored two spectacular free-kicks to give his side a shock lead before Tottenham forward Harry Kane netted an injury-time equaliser.

Nonetheless, following his impressive display against England, former Celtic striker Jackon believes English Premier League clubs may now take the like of Griffiths seriously.

“Maybe people down south, even in the way commentators such as Gary Neville were speaking about him, maybe sit up and take notice,” said Jackson, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“However, if the wee man is in the Celtic team, then I don’t think he wants to be anywhere else.

“He backs himself to be better than anyone. He doesn’t think he’s better than any other striker at the club, but he’ll back himself.”

Prior to scoring against Gareth Southgate’s side, Griffiths had failed to find the back of the net in his first 12 matches for his home country.

However, he ended that goal drought in spectacular fashion which also helped Strachan’s side retain their hopes of reaching the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

During his career, Griffiths has only played for one English club and that was for Midlands outfit Wolves in League One.

He played 31 matches in all competitions for the former Premier League club, scoring 13 goals and finding the back of the net on three occasions.
