West Ham eye Walcott swoop

West Ham United are interested in signing Arsenal attacker Theo Walcott this summer, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim that the Hammers are weighing up a £25million swoop for the 47-time England international, who has struggled for regular opportunities at the Emirates Stadium of late.

Walcott began his Arsenal career as a highly-rated prospect, but has seen his development at the club stall after falling down the pecking order for a first-team role.

The 28-year-old, who has scored over 100 goals during his time at the club, made 37 appearances in all competitions last season, of which 29 were in the starting eleven.

His frustrations at his lack of regular opportunities at the club have been heightened by his recent absence from the England international squad, with a World Cup on the horizon in 2018.

The former Southampton academy star could therefore seek a way out of Arsenal in the coming months, and West Ham are understood to be waiting in the wings as they seek their own attacking reinforcements.

West Ham have already been linked with a host of high-profile names this summer, including Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, but a move for Walcott could see them strengthen their options out wide.

While Walcott has made public his preference to play as a centre-forward, West Ham are currently lacking in quality in the wider areas, and may value Walcott as a goalscoring winger.

A deal to sign him, however, would see West Ham smash their club transfer record for the second time in a year, with the £25million fee set to trump the £20.5million spent on Andre Ayew last summer.
