Tottenham and England star Eric Dier insists that his mind will be on exacting revenge over Newcastle as the sides are set to clash on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The Magpies signed off their last match in the Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season with a 5-1 drubbing of Spurs at St James’ Park, despite playing 20 minutes with only 10 men.

Georginio Wijnaldum (two), Aleksandar Mitrovic, Rolando Aarons, and Daryl Janmaat all hit home for Rafael Benitez’s side, while the Serbian striker was dismissed and Erik Lamela grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors.

Wednesday saw the 2017/18 list of Premier League fixtures released, and threw up a repeat of the Magpies’ last top flight outing ahead of their return following promotion from the Championship.

However, Tottenham defender Eric Dier insists that the Lilywhites will be looking to get their own back after the humiliating defeat.

He told Spurs’ official website: “”Newcastle have just come up and I’m sure the atmosphere will be fantastic for their first game back in the Premier League.

“We want to start well – and make up for what happened there on the last day of the season two years ago.”

Spurs will come into this season hoping to continue their fine form which has seen them involved in the title race for two successive seasons, although may have to do so without star man Kyle Walker.

The 27-year-old right-back has been heavily linked with a move away from North London, with Sky Sports claiming that Manchester City are set to make a £40million move for the England man.

Newcastle can also expect a busy summer transfer window, with boss Benitez looking to overhaul his squad ahead of their return to the top flight.
