Tottenham have approached Fiorentina over a possible summer move for Matias Vecino, according to a Scottish Sun report.

The newspaper claims Spurs are “preparing a move” for the 25-year-old central midfielder, who they see as a potential replacement for Eric Dier, who could leave this summer.

It is said Fiorentina may place a hefty price tag on Vecino, as he only signed a contract extension last May, which ties him to the club until 2021.

The report states Manchester United are targeting Dier as manager Jose Mourinho looks to add some steel to his midfield.

This comes after Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb reported on Thursday that Spurs had been in contact with Vecino’s representatives over a potential summer move.

The 25-year-old was a mainstay of Fiorentina’s midfield last term, and he made 40 appearances in all competitions as a deep-lying playmaker, which yielded four goals and four assists.

He joined the Serie A club from Nacional in January 2013 in a £2million switch, and he has since played 58 league and cup games for the club.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bolster his squad this summer as he hopes to make a serious title challenge next term, and he has identified the central midfielder as a potential reinforcement.

Vecino has been capped by Uruguay on 13 occasions, and he played the full 90 minutes in their 3-0 friendly defeat to Italy earlier this month.
