Alan Shearer has been critical of Tottenham ace Dele Alli after England recorded a 2-2 draw against Scotland at the weekend.

The 21-year-old was picked to start the World Cup qualifier by manager Gareth Southgate but the Spurs man produced a poor display during the match.

His club teammate, Harry Kane struck a late equaliser in stoppage time after Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths had scored two spectacular free-kicks.

Match of the Day pundit, Shearer was questioning where the likes of Alli and Chelsea defender Gary Cahill were during the match.

Shearer claimed that a lot of English players cannot produce the same performances on the international stage to the one they produce at club level.

“There are, of course, exceptions and it is great to see the way the English players have thrived at Tottenham,” Shearer told the Sun.

“But take them out of that club bubble and drop them into a team with other English players and it does not look so good. Where is the Dele Alli that lights up the Premier League prompting comparison with Paul Gascoigne?

“Where is the assured Gary Cahill who was at fault in giving away the free-kick for Scotland’s equaliser? Not quite as assured alongside Chris Smalling as he is with David Luiz and the excellent Cesar Azpilicueta.”

During the match, Alli failed to produce the same performance that have won him plaudits at White Hart Lane this season which resulted in him winning the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Late into the second half against Scotland, Southgate opted to substitute the attacking midfielder for Manchester City wide man Raheem Sterling.

During his international career, Alli has represented his country on 18 occasions where he has found the back of the net on two occasions added with his two assists.

At club level, he recently scored 22 goals in all competitions for his side, including 18 strikes in 37 Premier League matches.
