Former defender Graham Roberts admits he can see why Tottenham youngster Joshua Onomah is backed to be a future star.

Roberts took to his personal Twitter account on Sunday evening to deliver his verdict on the 20-year-old midfielder, following his display for England’s Under-20 side in their World Cup Final victory over Venezuela.

He said: “Well done to the England under 20 but especially Joshua Onomah was superb today and can see why Poch thinks he will go on to big things.”

Onomah had missed the semi-final clash with Italy due to suspension, but returned to the starting line-up for the all-important showdown with their South American opponents.

The Tottenham academy product, who is rated very highly by manager Mauricio Pochettino, gave an impressive and physical display in the midfield for England, a performance which prompted praise from Roberts on Twitter.

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s first-half strike proved to be the difference between the two sides, but England could have doubled their lead with just over 20 minutes still to play, only for Onomah’s bullet effort from 25-yards to cannon back off the crossbar.

Onomah has come on leaps and bounds under Tottenham manager Pochettino, with the Argentine handing him a first-team debut during the 2015-16 campaign.

He made both his Premier League and Champions League debuts that season, but retained an important role in the first-team squad over the course of the most recent season.

Pochettino handed his young star another 12 senior appearances in all competitions last term, with the midfielder also netting his first senior goal for the club in a 5-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup.

He was named in the Premier League matchday squad on 15 occasions as Tottenham finished second, but Onomah could be set to play an even bigger role in the coming years as Pochettino retains a glowing affection for the young star.
