Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to spend £70-80million to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Kane enjoyed a superb season with Spurs last term, leading them to a second-place finish in the Premier League and to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

The 23-year-old striker bagged 35 goals in 38 league and cup games, as well as supplying seven assists.

By scoring seven goals in his final two league matches, with four against Leicester and a hat-trick against Hull, he also secured the league’s golden boot award.

Man United finished sixth in this season’s Premier League campaign, but they did win the Europa League, thereby securing Champions League football for next season.

Merson believes that in order for United to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title they need to sign a top striker, and he recommends Kane.

Speaking on Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Star, Merson said: “I think if you’re paying £90m for Pogba, I think Harry Kane could take a bid.

“The problem with Man Utd is they’ve got to buy players that are proven in the Premier League. I thought Pogba was going to be a great player but you don’t want to bring players in where it’s going to take a year for them to settle.

“So for me Harry Kane ticks the box, I think they might dip their foot in the water there and say: ‘Right, lets see if we can get Harry Kane for £70/80m’.”

Kane broke into the first team set-up at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and he has since become a key player for the club, scoring 99 goals in 165 appearances in all competitions, as well as providing 17 assists.

He has also been capped by England 17 times, scoring five goals, and he featured in all four matches of their disappointing 2016 European Championships campaign.
