Newcastle United have lost out to Swansea City in the race for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed on Tuesday evening that the in-demand teenager has agreed to join the Swans on a one-year loan from the Premier League champions.

The Mirror report that Swansea “beat off stiff competition” from Newcastle, who were “bang in the hunt” for Abraham but were unable to agree the terms of a deal.

The 19-year-old, who scored 26 goals during an exceptional loan spell at Championship side Bristol City last season, will link up with former Chelsea assistant manager Paul Clement at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins went public with his club’s interest in signing the Stamford Bridge ace on Monday, although he said there was competition and no deal had been agreed at that point.

Abraham has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent weeks and it has been widely reported that extensive talks took place.

However, it would now now seem as though Newcastle have lost out on the England Under-21 international, who has opted to play alongside the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente at Swansea next season.

This is a blow to Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, who is keen to strengthen his forward line-up as the club prepare for a return to the top flight following their promotion.
