Southampton have entered the race to sign Arsenal defender Calum Chambers this summer, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Saints are interested in signing the 22-year-old on a season long loan.

The report claims that the Premier League side are looking to add more defensive options to the squad as they fear club captain Virgil van Dijk will leave this summer.

This comes after the report in the Mirror which claimed that Southampton are also interested in signing Tottenham centre-back Kevin Wimmer this summer.

The Saints face stiff competition in their pursuit of the defender as there are a number of Premier League clubs also keen on signing Chambers.

The Daily Mail recently reported that Everton and newly-promoted Newcastle United want to sign the central defender this summer with Arsenal prepared to accept an offer around £15million.

Chambers started his footballing career with Southampton and spent 12 years at the club, making a total of 25 appearances with the first-team.

The Englishman moved to the North London side three years ago but he has been unable to become a first-team regular at the club.

The defender spent last season out on loan with Middlesborough where he featured in 27 matches in all competitions.

Chambers is currently playing international football with the England Under-21 national team at the European Championships.

The central defender’s contract at the Emirates Stadium runs out in 2020.
