Ruben Semedo reveals reason for Newcastle rejection

Ruben Semedo has revealed he decided to join Villarreal to help his new side win a La Liga title despite reported interest from Newcastle.

Sky Sports reported last week that the Toon were in pole position to sign the former Sporting Lisbon defender for £13million, who was also said to be interesting West Ham and West Brom.

However, the 23-year-old ace has decided to move to Spain and has been quoted by Villarreal’s official website as saying he likes Villarreal’s style on the pitch and believes he can help Fran Escriba’s side win the Spanish title.

“I chose Villarreal because I like their style of play. The team has a lot of quality and I think can help the team with my quality,” Semedo said.

“I had other clubs interested in me, good clubs from England.

“But when I heard the name Villarreal I decided to come here. I’m excited to play in La Liga, to win titles for Villarreal, help the team and have a good season.”

The eight-time Portugal international has reportedly caught the attention of a number of Toon fans this season after making 31 appearances for Lisbon, despite his side’s poor third-placed finish in Liga NOS.

Semedo kept 12 clean sheets in his outings for the club and that form has now seen him jump ship, joining Villarreal ahead of the summer transfer window.

Known for his quick pace and combative nature at the back, Semedo had been eyed by the Toon to partner captain Jamaal Lascelles at the back as Rafa Benitez looks to press on with his summer dealings.

The Chronicle now claim Newcastle will turn their attention to French defender Florian Lejeune, who has a release clause worth £8.7million. It is believed that the Toon are willing to pay that figure in full to land their man.
