Newcastle defender Jamie Sterry says he is eyeing up a return to the first team as he looks to make a full recovery from groin surgery.

The 21-year-old right back, who is a graduate of the Newcastle academy, went under the knife at the end of May for an injury issue which had been plaguing him for months.

He had been on loan at League One side Coventry City for the latter half of last season, but insists he is pushing on to make himself part of the first team at St James’ Park.

The youngster already has first team experience for the Magpies, having made his debut in the 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham on the final day of the 2015/16 season.

That was the last game the Magpies played in the Premier League following their relegation, but they will open their latest top flight campaign with a repeat of the tie, and Sterry is hoping to be in contention.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m ready to work hard, and I’m hoping to be back just before the start of the season.”

“They (Spurs) are a really good team, and it’d be great for me to get some minutes.

“Hopefully next season I’ll be able to stay fit and keep going.”

Sterry made 20 appearances for Coventry last season, scoring his only goal in a 1-1 draw against Morecambe in the FA Cup, the only match he turned out at left back.

He has also earned a lot of experience playing for Newcastle U23s, having made 34 appearances during his time at the North East club.
