Newcastle have been dealt a blow in their transfer dealings after Anderlecht ended their reported interest in goalkeeper Matz Sels, according to the Chronicle.

The north-east newspaper claimed on their website that the Belgian club were looking at a move for the 25-year-old goalkeeper but have decided to turnedĀ their attention to Danish keeper Frederick Ronnow instead.

Sels joined Newcastle from KAA Gent in the summer of 2016, and began their Championship season as boss Rafael Benitez’s first choice between the sticks.

However, a series of unconvincing displays led to Sels being replaced by Karl Darlow, who spent the majority of the season as the first choice goalkeeper.

Now Sels appears to have dropped further down the pecking order with Rob Elliot, who returned from a serious knee injury, favoured in goal in the Magpies’ end of season fixtures.

The Chronicle report that Benitez is ready to let the Belgian stopper depart St James’ Park this summer, with Tim Krul and Freddie Woodman returning from loan to further increase the pool of goalkeepers at the Spanish manager’s disposal.

The newspaper say that there is interest from clubs across Turkey, Holland, France and Spain for Sels, 25, and that the club are keen to offload himĀ in order to increase their transfer fund this summer.
