Former Newcastle manager John Carver has urged Newcastle to pursue a number of loan signings this summer such as Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Magpies have endured a frustrating transfer so far, with Christian Atsu the only signing after the club turned his loan deal from Chelsea into a permanent one.

The Tyneside club were reported by Lee Ryder of the Chronicle to be interested in securing another temporary deal for a pacey winger this summer in the shape of Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo.

However, they could be disappointed, with the Shields Gazette claim that Liverpool are not looking to send him out on loan for the upcoming season.

Former Newcastle head coach Carver, who controversially had a row with a fan while in charge at St James’ Park, believes that loan signings are a way for Newcastle to progress this season, and believes the Chelsea starlets would be a perfect fit.

He also believes that Newcastle are in a strong position with their finances, as he expects the Magpies to bring in more revenue by offloading some of the fringe players who helped earn them promotion last season.

He told talkSPORT on Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast (09:00 – 09:30): “You were talking about Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek – why don’t Newcastle go on and get two or three of those and that will improve the squad?

“You look at the assets they have got there – Five or six players who are saleable assets and that will be extra money to go into the coffers.

“There will be sides in the Championship knocking on Newcastle’s door.”

Carver, who described himself as the best coach in the Premier League during his stint as manager, won just three of his 20 games in charge, before being replaced by former England boss Steve McClaren.

Chalobah, who is 22-years-old, and 21-year-old Loftus-Cheek both operate as central midfielders, and are both experienced England U21 internationals.

The duo made a number of cameo appearances from the bench for Antonio Conte’s side last season, although managed just nine starts between the two of them, mainly in cup competitions.
